Tony Hodson has sent me the above image, purchased from Simon Lewis, believing that it could possibly be the Austin Seven Ulster which Tony now owns. Neither Tony, nor Simon, nor I, can identify the event and/or location. Can you?
The only clues are that it comes from a roll of film which includes photos of the 1937 (or 1938?) TT at Donington Park, so September 1937 or 1938 maybe? Simon has suggested possibly the 1937 MCC Edinburgh, but it doesn’t match my knowledge of any of the sections used for the Edinburgh (nor the MCC Sporting Trial) for either 1937 or 1938. The original photo is, unfortunately, not sharp enough to identify the car registration, nor the trial number (although this could be, or include, “27”).
I suspect Yorkshire, or the Lake District, or maybe even North Wales, rather than the Peak District, the South West, or any other 1930s trialling area. But … surely someone can identify this location. Please use the Contact Me link to the right.
Update – 28-Aug-2025 3:00pm:
Within a few hours of posting the above, I received an email from David Moffat positively identifying the section as Haggs Bank (aka Haggs Mine) in Upper Weardale, still used for the annual Beamish Trophy Trial (motorcycles only). So … thank you David!
The foot of the section is here – https://w3w.co/workers.jingles.height – and if you switch to Satellite View, and zoom out, you can clearly see the section as a series of hairpins rising to the north-east.
However, although the location is now identified, tracking-down the actual event will be more tricky. Luckily, I’m off to the VSCC Library in a couple of weeks’ time, so may have an opportunity to trawl their extensive magazine collection.
