The MCC has always prided itself on the ethos of its events being ‘Competitor versus the Club’ rather than ‘Competitor versus Competitor’ as it is for almost all other forms of motorsport. We all know, of course, that this is not strictly true as the Baddeley Awards (one for cars and one for motorcycles), for the best individual performances across three consecutive MCC trials, have been running since 1955. It would now appear that the very first MCC award for the ‘Best performance on the day’ was made following the 1947 Sporting Trial when the President’s Award went to Geoffrey Mansell (Allard V8 Special). So … ‘Competitor versus Competitor’ on MCC events has actually been around for nearly 80 years.
